Cable cars wired up

The Emirates Air-Line cable car service gets one step closer to full operation with the installation of the cable cars. They can now be seen suspended off the cable carried along pylons between Emirates Greenwich Peninsula and Emirates Royal Docks stations.

Advertising on London Overground

Advertising comes in many forms and one form is on the trains themselves. An advert for Lycamobile has been advertised on one Class 378 train on London Overground. The photos below show the new look and was taken at South Kenton station.

Have you spotted this train or any other? Let us know your thoughts!

Bakerloo line station improvements begin

It has only happened in the last few weeks, but there are now signs of improvements being made on the Bakerloo line stations north of Queen’s Park. When London Underground took operations of the stations from Harrow & Wealdstone and Queen’s Park in November 2007, only temporary signage was installed and various improvements including deep cleaning the stations, adding better lighting, new passenger information boards and new paintwork. After almost five years of waiting, the stations are finally being transformed into typical London Underground stations – but that could be to do with the fact that the Olympics are coming this summer in London. We have been looking closely at South Kenton station in the last few years and are pleased with the final results! Here are some photos of the improvements:

1. The new roundel signage at South Kenton

2. This signage is already falling slightly apart below…or perhaps they didn’t fix it properly!

3. A view of the island platform

4. The new look way out signage is now here

5. The platform signs are also installed here

6. A view of the platform under the shelter along with the new line diagram

7. The line diagram now showing where trains go…something that should have already been there (Silverlink didn’t do anything about that!)

8. The larger Way Out sign is now seen

9. A view of the line diagram plus the brand new London Underground benches

10. The platform looking northbound

11. The platform looking southbound

12. An interesting contrast of old and new – notice the old Silverlink station sign

And we have what we call a station needing new signage after these improvements…how long could we see such signage? This photo was taken back in October 2008.

As well as these works, new signage can also be seen currently at Kenton and Wembley Central stations. Here are the new roundels for the respective stations.

We will be looking at the improvement works in the next few weeks, but it is clear that the improvements have only just started.

Cable car approaches completion

The Emirates Air-Line cable car service is taking shape and there are clear, visible signs of the new transport link around the parts of Docklands connected. Below is a latest image of the Emirates Royal Docks station building demonstrating the curve at its eastern end that will see cable cars traverse as they enter and then exit the terminus on a journey of 5 minutes that will take them to Emirates Greenwich Peninsula station and back. There will be a service frequency of 30 seconds and walking distance interchanges with Royal Victoria DLR station and North Greenwich Jubilee line Underground station. Naturally, the view from the cable cars will be spectacular and it is hoped the service will be in full public operation this coming summer.

The Air-Line service is being operated in conjunction with airline carrier, Emirates.

Boris Johnson re-elected Mayor…promises further transport developments

The 2012 election for Mayor of London took on a nail biting climax after early feelings of a landslide victory by Conservative candidate and incumbent, Boris Johnson were replaced by tense anticipation of a narrow margin win by either Johnson or Labour candidate and former Mayor, Ken Livingstone. The election result came in towards the last few minutes of the 4th of May after an over 25 hour wait for all London constituency results to come through. Delays had been incurred through computer problems related to counting of votes at Alexandra Palace at the start of proceedings and a recount of votes in the Brent & Harrow constituency.

The following is the verbatim of the transport pledges set out by Boris Johnson in his manifesto.

Protect investment in transport infrastructure to complete the upgrade of the Northern line and maintain momentum in delivering the upgrade of the Circle, Metropolitan, District and Hammersmith and City lines to support London’s economy and transform the network. I will not cut £1.14 billion from transport funding and put the upgrades at risk.

„Cut delays on the Tube by a further 30 per cent through my delay-busting plan.

„Ensure Crossrail stays on track, on time and on budget, bringing 1.5 million people within a 45 minute commute of the existing major employment centres of the West End, the City and Canary Wharf.

„Introduce Automatic Train Control on 48 per cent of London Underground rolling stock by the end of 2014, paving the way for the first driverless train within a decade.

„Insist that funding for Crossrail 2 from Chelsea to Hackney is part of the HS2 link.

„Secure from Government changes in Britain’s strike laws to introduce 50% minimum
turnout on ballots.

„Ensure transparency and honesty over fares policy.

„Protect the 24-hour Freedom Pass and ensure that it is available on TfL services to all
Londoners from age 60.

„Lobby the Train Operating Companies to extend the Freedom Pass for use on suburban rail before 9.30am.

„Guarantee concessionary fares for the elderly, young, job seekers and injured veterans.

„Introduce contactless ‘wave and pay’ style payments on the transport network, allowing
passengers to pay with their credit cards and mobile phones.

„Introduce a Courtesy Card to require those under 16s who benefit from free travel on the buses to treat other travellers with respect.

„Lobby the government to devolve rail franchising powers to the Mayor so that TfL can specify the standards to be achieved by private Train Operating Companies: this will allow me to hold down fares; aim for a minimum frequency of service of four trains an hour on local services; improve the conditions of rundown suburban rail stations and improve safety, with more station staff and CCTV.

„Work to extend the DLR from Lewisham to Bromley.

„Aim to develop a Tramlink extension to Crystal Palace.

Work with Network Rail on proposals for longer trains and increased capacity on the suburban network at stations on routes in and around London.

„Protect the network in full from Ken Livingstone’s plans to take £1.14 billion out of the transport budget, especially the suburban bus services on which so many people rely.

„Roll out the New Bus for London with 600 vehicles on London’s streets by the end of my term in 2016 as existing buses are decommissioned; and at no more cost than an existing hybrid bus.

„Roll out countdown machines to give people more real-time arrival information and improve passengers’ journeys.

„Continue to ensure that ramps on buses should always work and more bus stops are accessible.

„Launch a Congestion Busting Plan to:
• establish a £50 million Roads Blackspot Fund to relieve congestion at key locations in
London;
• establish the London Roads Task Force to propose long-term proposals to tackle London’s most notorious roads, including locations such as Hammersmith Flyover, Purley Way, Wandsworth Town Centre, Euston Road, Archway, and Kings Cross;
• introduce Lane Rental to tackle road works and expand the ‘Report It’ system to potholes;
• expand the role of the Metropolitan Police’s traffic police to keep traffic moving, including reopening roads faster after accidents; and continue to review the phasing of traffic lights to improve conditions for all road users.

„Direct money from Lane Rental to reduce the congestion caused by road works.

„Promote more shared space improvements to our public realm.

„Call on each borough to review parking in non-residential, strategic shopping areas to reduce any negative impact on businesses.

„Crack down on dangerous rickshaws.

„Set up a ‘Cabbie Cabinet’.

„Expand pedestrian countdown to continue to make crossings safer.

„Drive forward a new road tunnel under the river between Greenwich Peninsula and Silvertown.

„Lobby the Government for those living in Havering and Bexley to receive the same discounts on the Dartford Crossing as residents in Dartford and Thurrock.

„Never introduce a London-wide Congestion Charge or a £25 tax on family cars.

„Expand Cycle Hire to West and East, and explore expansion to parts of South London and town centres in outer London, including Bromley, Croydon, Hounslow, Kingston, Richmond, and Romford town centres.

„Improve cycle safety by reviewing the 500 cycle accident hotspots.

„Triple the number of cycle super-highways.

„Host a world-class cycling festival at the Olympic Park.

„Launch a new car ferry service at Thamesmead to Gallions Reach.

„Examine the feasibility of a new pedestrian river crossing between Vauxhall and Chelsea
bridges.

„Aim to double the capacity of river travel on the Thames by 2020 by creating new piers and increasing capacity to 12 million travellers a year.

„Protect the jobs and wider economic prosperity created by the global connections with suppliers and markets that Heathrow provides.

„Continue to oppose a third runway at Heathrow and oppose any changes in operation that measurably harm local people.

„Fight for a reduction in night flights and to ban the oldest, noisiest aircraft from Heathrow’s densely populated flight paths.

„Lobby for an increase in London’s aviation capacity through the development of a new hub airport.

Mayoral Election – Transport Manifestos – Part 5: Siobhan Benita

In the fifth of our series of blog posts covering the forthcoming London Mayoral and Assembly election on the 3 May 2012 we will be focussing on the transport pledges of the various candidates bidding for the post of Mayor of London. We look here at the Independent candidate, Siobhan Benita.

Part 1: Boris Johnson
Part 2: Ken Livingstone
Part 3: Brian Paddick
Part 4: Jenny Jones
Part 5: Siobhan Benita
Part 6: Carlos Cortiglia
Part 7: Lawrence Webb

Siobhan Benita is a former civil servant and has acted as policy adviser on transport, local government and environmental issues. She has also had a role in the Cabinet Office and the Department of Health and this year became the Independent candidate for the London mayorship. Here is the verbatim of her transport pledges from her manifesto.

Freeze fares until 2014. This is a freeze at current prices and so, depending upon the rate of inflation, will represent a real terms cut in fares for Londoners.

Introduce reduced fares for people on low incomes. Within 90 days of coming to power I will announce what level of reductions will be offered to Londoners on a low income. The reductions will be a percentage of the travel fare, on a sliding scale depending upon an individual’s income. Anyone earning less than the London living wage (currently £8.30 per hour) will qualify for some level of reduction.

Offer free travel in London for people who are actively seeking employment, helping them to get to interviews and rejoin the economically active population in the capital.

Reduce fares for students. I will increase their travel discount to 40% and also extend this discount so that it can be used on Oyster cards for those students who do not travel regularly.

Run the tube one hour later every Friday and Saturday night to make it easier for people to enjoy London. Plans are already in place for the tube to operate for longer hours during the Olympics – I will ensure that running tubes later on a Friday and Saturday is part of the Olympic legacy for Londoners. This proposal has already received significant support from leading West End business groups such as New West End, the company representing businesses in Bond Street, Oxford Street and Regent Street, the British Hospitality Association and the British Beer & Pub Association.

Work with train operators to pilot a skeleton all-night suburban train service to key stations in the outer boroughs. In the first instance, this could be piloted for one night at the weekend.

Introduce variable charges throughout the day to discourage road use at the most congested times.

Re-instate monitoring of the impact of the congestion charge.

Keep the congestion charge zone to its current boundaries.

Ensure that the most dangerous road junctions in London are identified and then redesigned to make them safer for all users.

Ensure that all new road projects are undertaken with cycling safety in mind.

Make 20mph the default speed limit in residential areas where there are no cycle lanes.

Work with the relevant organisations to improve training of cyclists and drivers and lobby for cycle safety to become a core part of the driving test.

Review the entire cycle network with a view to re-vamping and improving it. Where feasible, bikes and other vehicles should be physically separated, but I will also explore other, creative “shared space” ideas that recognise the needs of all road users and pedestrians.

Make sure that cycling facilities and funding is made available to outer boroughs as well as central ones, offering better opportunities to the 60% of Londoners who live in these areas, whether they choose to cycle for work or leisure.

Introduce a service of frequent, high-speed boats on the Thames running from Putney to Woolwich.

Improve integration between river services and the rest of our transport system.

Upgrade piers to produce first-class facilities for an expanding service.

Ensure river services are designed to be accessible to people with disabilities and other special requirements.

Regulate rickshaws where I have power to do so and work with others to bring in a total ban.

Drive out illegal minicabs, working with the Police and Government to bring in legislation if necessary.

Review provision of taxi ranks across London with a view to having more outside key venues.

Work with industry on the creation of a greener, cheaper cab that meets our city’s needs.

The introduction of travel cards for part-time workers. Many part time workers, who are still disproportionally female, are not able to enjoy the convenience or level of discount that a monthly or annual travel card can offer.

I will introduce new travel card options that benefit people who regularly work on a part-time basis.

I will reform the Oyster “maximum charge” trap to prevent honest users of public transport incurring unfair fines.

I will work with suburban rail services to automate fare reimbursements to Oyster cards when there are qualifying service delays.

You can read more about Siobhan Benita’s transport pledges in her manifesto at her website, www.siobhanformayor.com.
